On Wednesday evening, November 10th, we attended, via zoom webinar, the Diversity Center of Northeast Ohio’s 67th Annual Humanitarian Award Virtual Celebration for which was sponsored in part by [nap_names id=”FIRM-NAME-1″] as a Unity Partner.
Indeed, we respect the work of the Diversity Center because it “is committed to building communities where all people are connected, respected and valued.”
This year the Humanitarian Award Honorees were:
***Mr. Craig Arnold, Chairman, and CEO of Eaton who recently led a coalition of businesspersons in a successful effort during the pandemic to close Cleveland’s digital divide by creating hot spots and distributing computers to approximately 20,000 low-income families.
***Mr. Andrew Berry, Executive Vice President of Football Operations and General Manager, the Cleveland Browns, and the Cleveland Browns Organization who was a driving force behind the launch of the “Be the Solution” campaign which, in a time when we were stricken by the pandemic and the tragic death of George Floyd, called for members of the Greater Cleveland community, to take some time to study, learn, and appreciate our diversity and differences.
In addition, to Mr. Arnold and Mr. Berry, several other people were honored, and these were:
***Mr. Owen Ganor (Student Diversity Champion Award Recipient) from Rocky River High School
***Ms. NaNetta Hullum (Diversity Education & Citizenship Leadership Award Recipient) who is the Chief Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Officer at Gilmour Academy
***Ms. Rebecca Scina (PwC LeadDIVERSITY Alumni Award Recipient) who is Cloud Delivery Manager Hyland, and Pride Alliance, President.
During the program, the values of diversity and inclusion were upheld during the short talks given by the award recipients as well as those who provided comments and introductions like Mr. Eric Gordon, CEO of CMSD, who said that as a nation of peoples who immigrated to the United States from other lands, “diversity is at the heart of our democracy. Diversity makes us all stronger.”
Along these lines, Ms. Hullum said that “diversity makes us stronger because diversity of thought offers observance of the unique voices of our global community.”
Likewise, Ms. Scina noted that “when we hire, retain, and support diverse employees we welcome perspectives that may not have otherwise been considered.”
And Mr. Ganor, a young person of promise, spoke from his own experience when he shared with us his viewpoint that “diversity education exposes people to different people, ideas, and cultures. This exposure allows them to be more active in their communities and treat these different people and cultures with respect and understanding. It is vitally important to do this as it is the only way to make solutions that help everyone.”
