Estonian Independence Day held in the Estonian Garden at the Cleveland Cultural Gardens

On Sunday afternoon, June 27th, we went to a celebration of Estonian Independence Day held in the Estonian Garden at the Cleveland Cultural Gardens commemorating both St. John’s Day (i.e. the birth of John the Baptist) and Victory Day when the Estonians defeated the Germans in 1919.

Along these lines, Mr. Toomas Tubalkain spoke for a few minutes regarding Estonian history and battles for independence against Germany and Russia that were hard-fought but ultimately successful.

Prayers were offered by Pastor Peeter Birn from the Unity Lutheran Church in Old Brooklyn and all present posed for a group photo in front of the Estonian monument.

As a special treat, current mayoral candidate and former U.S. Congressperson Dennis J. Kucinich, who was awarded the Cross of Terra Mariana by the Estonian government, stopped by and gave a short but powerful speech in which he praised the people of Estonia for their commitment to diversity as well as to harmony.
