TPS extended for Haitians
Jeh Johnson, the Secretary of Homeland Security, has extended Temporary Protected Status for eligible nationals of Haiti for an additional 18 months, effective July 23, 2014 through Jan. 22, 2016. USCIS will begin taking applications to renew today, March 3, 2014 for a 60 day period that ends on May 2, 2014. TPS recipients will receive an updated Employment Authorization Document (EAD) and will be able to remain in the US until 2016. The Secretary of Homeland Security may designate a foreign country due to humanitarian concerns, such as natural disasters or civil wars, that prevent the safe return of nationals to that country. Currently, there are 8 countries with TPS status. In addition to Haiti, they are El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Somalia, Sudan, South Sudan, and Syria.
