Over 500,000 Companies Now Using E-Verify

According to USCIS, more than 500,000 companies are now using E-Verify, a free online service that determines if an employee is eligible to work in the United States. The system compares information from an employee’s Form I-9 to data from the Department of Homeland Security and the Social Security Administration and then confirms whether or not the she is able to work. Participation in the program is mandatory for federal contractors and most government workers, but voluntary for private sector employers. E-Verify has received positive feedback from its users due to its accuracy and speed. The program can determine an employee’s eligibility in less than 5 seconds and correctly authorizes workers 99% of the time. Government agencies gave the program a score of 67 out of 100 in the 2012 American Customer Satisfaction survey, making it one of the federal government’s highest rated services.

The Immigration Reform Bill that passed the Senate last year would have made E-Verify mandatory for all US employers and House Republicans mentioned implementing such a system in their recent “Standards for Immigration Reform” memo.
