2018 Annual Awards Banquet of The Eastern Lake County Chamber of Commerce

On Friday evening, January 26th, we went to the 2018 annual awards banquet of the Eastern Lake County Chamber of Commerce that was held at the LaMalfa on Heisley Road in Mentor.

The banquet was attended by over 170 people; many of them were local dignitaries so we got to talk to Ohio State Senator John Eklund (Republican-District 18) and Ohio State Representative John Rogers (Democrat-District 60) about the "Welcoming Ohio" legislation that is being crafted in Columbus that will affect sanctuary cities.

We also learned about an educational forum about immigration that will take place in early March at the Morley Library in Painesville. We very much intend attend and perhaps participate.

During dinner we enjoyed sharing a table with Ms. Chris Brill-Packard, an Outreach Representative for "Lake Health" who told them that there is a doctor there who does immigration physicals if any of our clients need them.

Also sitting with us were Ohio State Representative Ron Young (Republican-District 61) and Mr. Perry Alexandries who was representing Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted. Although we probably wouldn't have agreed on too many issues, we still liked and respected them as people and liked talking about our experiences working in government since we, ourselves, once worked for U.S. Congressperson Dennis J. Kucinich.

State Representative Young even told us that when he had his own business he employed quite a few international people and consulted "Margaret W. Wong & Associates" on visa matters.

When it was time to hand out awards, we watched as the Heritage Award was presented to "Friends of Madison Public Library"; the law firm of "Dworkin & Bernstein Co., L.P.A." being named outstanding business of the year; and Mr. William P. Horvath (recently deceased) being named outstanding citizen of the year.

In addition to the above awards that are presented annually, our friends from the chamber Ms. Linda Reed, Ms. Kathleen Obrenski, and Ms. Katrina March arranged for us to receive a special award for being a very active member. We learned, very much to our surprise, that we had attended 41 chamber events in just 12 months!

When we accepted our award we thanked Ms. Margaret W. Wong for giving us the opportunity to take part.
