40th Annual St. Thyagaraja Music Festival

After Saturday's Tax Day March concluded at the Student Union at CSU, we noticed that something was taking place next door at the Waetjen Auditorium so we walked over and discovered that it was the 40th Annual St. Thyagaraja Music Festival presented by the Aradhana Committee as well as Cleveland State University, the Siva Vishnu Temple of Greater Cleveland, and the Sree Venkateswara Temple of Cleveland which will run until April 23rd and take place at various venues throughout Cleveland as well as CSU.

As the program notes stated, "the Thyagaraja Festival is a musical homage to the Saint-Composer Sri Thyagaraja, whose consummate skill in composition and scholarly expessions are matched only by his devotion to Lord Rama. The Cleveland Festival will attempt to reflect these aspects of the Saint."

As the letter of Dr. Ronald M. Berkman, Ph.D., the President of CSU, that was printed in the program read in part, "the Cleveland Thyagaraja Festival is the largest Indian Classical Music Festival outside of India and represents the best showcase of talent and culture from Southern India."

U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown's letter (in the program also) read in part, "the 2017 Cleveland Thyagaraja Festival allows those in the Cleveland area and throughout the state of Ohio to experience the richness of Indian culture through classical music and dance. In its fortieth year, this annual event fosters friendship and mutual understanding."

We recalled that during last year's festival we hung our banner from "Margaret W. Wong & Associates" in Waetjen Auditorium so we contacted Dr. Sangeetha Rathnakara Mangalampalli Balamuralikrishna (known to his friends as "Bala") to see if it was still possible for us to do so this year. "Bala' was very understanding and gave his consent and, since our offices were closed during Easter, we were able to work out a plan for payment.

And so by the end of Saturday, our banner hung in Waetjen Auditorium in support of the festival, the wonderful talent that it showcased, and its purpose.
