Eastern Lake County Chamber of Commerce Luncheon

IMG_8772.JPG

On Thursday, March 23rd, we went to a general membership luncheon of the Eastern Lake County Chamber of Commerce that was held at the Madison Campus of Lakeland Community College.

On this day, there was a panel composed of Mr. Jeff Slavkovsky, Principal at Auburn Career Center; Dr. Brian D. Posler, President of Lake Erie College; Dr. Gretchen Skok DiSanto, Associate Professor of Business Management at Lakeland Community College; and Ms. Amy Harker, Director of Student Services at Perry Public Schools who discussed the role of education and what is being done and what could be done to insure that local businesses ensured a steady flow of qualified employees. The discussion was moderated by Mr. Brian Bontempo, Superintendent of the Lake County Educational Service Center. All of the panelists were very dedicated to helping students excell and live fulfilling lives which included preparing them for lucrative jobs many of which are available in the Lake County area.

Also present at this event were 9 students from Harvey High School in Painesville who were part of the "E City" program which stands for Entrepreneurship, Connecting, Inspiring, and Teaching Youth. We learned from their teacher, Ms. Nell Rappaport that "E City" is a 70 hour semester-long class that teaches entrepreneurship, business, and life skills to high school students. We looked over the products that the students had produced which included flower arrangements, placemats, soy candles, and hand-made bracelets all of which indicated promise.

We were also impressed by a project that will take place at the Auburn Career Center on May 4th which is a "Reverse Job Fair" in which, instead of students visiting employers at their tables as is the case in a traditional job fair, the employers will visit the students at THEIR tables and collect resumes, project samples, and engage in productive conversations.
