Celebrating Culture and Community at the 2026 Cleveland Dragon Boat Festival
On Saturday, August 29, 2026, the team at Margaret W. Wong & Associates LLC got up early and headed to Merwin’s Wharf in Cleveland’s Riverview Park to attend the opening ceremony of the 2026 Cleveland Dragon Boat Festival. We were proud to participate as one of the sponsors of this annual celebration, which brings together athletes, families, community organizations, and people from diverse cultural backgrounds for a day of competition, connection, and fun.
The Cleveland Dragon Boat Festival is much more than a sporting event. It is also a wonderful example of how cultural traditions travel with immigrant communities and become part of the broader American cultural landscape.
The Dragon Boat Festival: A Chinese Tradition in America
Dragon Boat Festivals have their roots in China, but the tradition has found an enthusiastic following throughout the United States. Like culturally significant foods, music, holidays, and other traditions brought to America by immigrants, dragon boat racing demonstrates how immigration contributes to the cultural richness of American communities.
One description of the tradition noted that the Dragon Boat Festival is a long-standing Chinese tradition that has made a major splash—quite literally—across the United States and is often described as one of the country’s fastest-growing water sports.
The popularity of dragon boat racing is a testament to the ability of cultural traditions to cross borders, connect generations, and bring people together. What began as a traditional Chinese festival has become a vibrant community event in cities throughout the United States.
The Cleveland Dragon Boat Association
The festival we attended was organized by the Cleveland Dragon Boat Association (CDBA), an organization established in 2008 with the goal of introducing dragon boat paddling to Cleveland and the surrounding communities.
According to the CDBA, its mission is to promote the synergy of community, health, and team building through the sport of dragon boat paddling in Northeast Ohio. The organization also seeks to foster a greater sense of community along the Cuyahoga River and throughout Cleveland, promote cross-cultural awareness, and support the health and wellness of people of all ages, races, cultures, and abilities.
Those goals make the Cleveland Dragon Boat Festival particularly meaningful. The event is not simply about who crosses the finish line first. It is about teamwork, physical activity, cultural awareness, and creating opportunities for people from different backgrounds to come together.
A Meaningful Opening Ceremony
The festival began with an opening ceremony conducted by Venerable Shih Yingfa, a Buddhist monk. The ceremony provided a meaningful connection to the cultural traditions behind dragon boat racing.
As part of the ceremony, Venerable Shih Yingfa prayed that the participating dragon boats and their crews would be watched over and protected from undue influences and that everyone would return safely to their berths.
It was a fitting way to begin a day centered on both competition and community. While dragon boat racing is an exciting and physically demanding sport, safety and the well-being of the participants remain essential.
But there was also a lighter moment.
Because it was still early in the morning, Venerable Shih Yingfa asked everyone to give the Dragons a hearty round of applause to wake them up so that the festival could begin.
The response was anything but quiet. The crowd’s applause was loud enough that he concluded the Dragons were undoubtedly awake and ready for the day.
With the Dragons officially awakened, the festival could begin—and the participants could focus on what mattered most: having fun, working together, and staying safe.
Celebrating Diversity Through Community
Events such as the Cleveland Dragon Boat Festival offer an important reminder of the role immigration plays in shaping communities throughout the United States.
When immigrants come to a new country, they do not leave their cultures behind. They bring traditions, stories, languages, foods, music, celebrations, and values with them. Over time, these traditions can become shared experiences that introduce an entire community to a different culture.
Dragon boat racing is a wonderful example.
A tradition rooted in Chinese history and culture has become an increasingly popular American sporting and community activity. In Cleveland, it also provides an opportunity for people from different cultural backgrounds to meet one another, compete as teams, support one another, and celebrate together.
For Margaret W. Wong & Associates LLC, supporting events like the Cleveland Dragon Boat Festival is particularly meaningful. Our work with immigrant communities has shown us time and again that cultural diversity is an important part of what makes Northeast Ohio—and the United States as a whole—stronger.
Looking Beyond the Race
Standing along the Cuyahoga River that Saturday morning, it was easy to see that the festival represented much more than dragon boats moving through the water.
It represented teamwork, health, cultural exchange, community, and connection.
The colorful boats and energetic crews may be what initially draw people to a Dragon Boat Festival, but the deeper significance is the opportunity to bring people together. The event demonstrates how a cultural tradition can take root in a new community while continuing to honor its origins.
We were honored that Margaret W. Wong & Associates LLC could support the 2026 Cleveland Dragon Boat Festival as a sponsor, and we were especially pleased to be there to experience the opening ceremony and the enthusiasm of everyone involved.
Congratulations to the Cleveland Dragon Boat Association, all of the participating teams and volunteers, and everyone who helped make the 2026 festival a success.
And, of course, a special thank-you to the Dragons themselves—for waking up early and being ready for a great day on the Cuyahoga River!
