Margaret W. Wong & Associates Sponsors 97th Mexican Mutual Society Anniversary in Lorain, Ohio

Community celebrating Mexican Mutual Society anniversaryOn Saturday, October 18, Margaret W. Wong & Associates LLC proudly served served as a Silver Sponsor for the Mexican Mutual Society anniversary fundraiser. The event was held at the Society’s long-standing home on East 28th Street in Lorain, Ohio.

Honoring Nearly a Century of Cultural Impact

Founded in 1928, the Mexican Mutual Society began as a nonprofit support network for Mexican immigrants who worked at the National Tube Steel Mill. In 1941, the organization purchased its current location—a former coffee house—which still operates as a central hub for the community.

A Celebration of Art and Heritage

One of the evening’s highlights was the unveiling of a new mural titled “Aztec Calendar.” Created by local artist Reinaldo Contreras III, the piece honors both his Mexican ancestry and the broader Latino community in Lorain.

Mr. Contreras, whose grandparents immigrated from Mexico, shared his motivation behind the mural in an interview with Spectrum News:

“I want to spread the word of how Mexicans were important to this country years and years ago — and we still are.”

He also emphasized the cultural meaning of the Aztec calendar:

“It dates back ages for our ancestry. It’s a symbol that people look toward for guidance and comfort.”

In agreement, Joel Arredondo, President of the Mexican Mutual Society, added:

“The whole concept of it makes people proud to know their heritage. The bright, vibrant colors are seen in many South and Central American cultures.”

Sharing History Through Storytelling Mexican Mutual Society anniversary event

In addition to the mural unveiling, attendees enjoyed a captivating presentation by Eileen Torres, a respected Latin music historian and former President of the Hispanic Fund of the Community Foundation of Lorain County. Over the years, she has developed cultural programs for the Kennedy Center, the Smithsonian Institution, and the National Geographic Society.
