What Is Divali?

Divali (also spelled Diwali) is one of the most widely celebrated and vibrant festivals in India and across the globe. The word Divali originates from the Sanskrit Deepavali, meaning “a row of lights.” During the festival, families light small clay lamps known as diyas, along with candles, to brighten their homes and hearts. These lights serve as symbols of hope, renewal, and spiritual victory.

In addition to lighting lamps, the five-day celebration includes traditional rituals, family gatherings, festive meals, and the exchange of gifts. Homes are cleaned and decorated, and many people wear new clothes as part of the joyful customs.
