A Conversation with Connie Chung and Margaret Wong

A Conversation with Connie Chung and Margaret W. Wong at Cuyahoga County Public Library

On Wednesday, October 1st, the Cuyahoga County Public Library (CCPL) hosted a special event at its Parma-Snow Branch. The program featured a lively conversation with Connie Chung and Margaret W. Wong, Esq., a well-known immigration attorney. Connie Chung is an award-winning journalist and author of the New York Times bestseller Connie: A Memoir.

The event took place in the Sari Feldman Auditorium. With 400 seats available, every seat was filled as fans gathered to hear these two trailblazing women speak.

Discussing Their Journeys and Shared Immigrant Backgrounds

During the conversation, Ms. Chung shared her journey as a first-generation American. Her parents immigrated to the United States from China with their four older children. Through hard work and determination, she became the first woman and the first Asian American to co-anchor the CBS Evening News.

Further into the discussion, Ms. Wong and Ms. Chung connected over their shared immigrant backgrounds. They spoke openly about challenges related to race and gender, and their stories were inspiring and often humorous, showing the strength of resilience and identity.

Why Libraries Matter

The Cuyahoga Library was a fitting place for this event as Ms. Chung has often emphasized how important libraries were in her childhood. She once said:

“Libraries were critical to me throughout my childhood because we didn’t have a lot of money… I really believe that getting a library card was better than getting a driver’s license.”

A Touching Moment

Later in the evening, Ms. Chung shared a heartfelt story. She learned that many young Asian American women were named “Connie” in her honor, which made her surprised and deeply moved. For many, the name “Connie” now represents hard work, bravery, and taking risks.
