USCIS Fee Changes: New Visa and Immigration Filing Fees
USCIS Fee Changes Announced in July 2025
On July 11, 2025, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced that it will soon implement new fees for certain immigration benefit requests. While the agency has confirmed that these changes are coming, specific details—such as which application types will be affected and the exact fee amounts—have not yet been released.
Immigration Fee Changes Under the “One Big Beautiful Bill”
-
B-1/B-2 (tourist/business) visas
-
F and M (student) visas
-
H-1B (temporary skilled worker) visas
-
J (exchange visitor) visas
The Visa Integrity Fee is non-waivable and indexed to inflation, meaning costs will increase annually starting in fiscal year 2026.
Impact on Indian and International Travelers
Indian nationals—among the largest groups of U.S. visa applicants—are expected to be especially affected. When factoring in the base visa fee, integrity surcharge, I-94 processing, and administrative charges, the cost of a typical B-1/B-2 visa could rise to approximately $472 (₹40,000).
These changes come at a critical time, as the U.S. prepares to co-host the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Travel industry experts warn that higher visa costs may discourage international tourism and participation—particularly from cost-sensitive markets such as India.
Refunds Available — But Only for Compliant Applicants
Although the new law allows for refunds of the Visa Integrity Fee, eligibility is strictly conditional. To qualify for a refund, applicants must:
-
Depart the U.S. before their visa expires
-
Comply fully with all visa terms and conditions
-
Not engage in unauthorized employment
Importantly, refunds are not automatic. Eligible travelers must submit a formal request to receive reimbursement.
What Visa Applicants Should Do Now
While USCIS has not announced when the new immigration benefit request fees will take effect, individuals planning to apply for:
-
Adjustment of status
-
Work authorization
-
Other immigration benefits
should start reviewing their eligibility and preparing in advance. Applying before the fee hikes take effect in 2026 may result in significant savings.
