Immigrant Stories in America: Pride, Culture, and Independence

Proud to Call America Home!

This week, as we celebrate Independence Day, we also take a moment to reflect on the cultural independence that defines us. These immigrant stories in America remind us that freedom is both shared and personal.

At our multicultural office, we are proud to represent a vibrant mix of backgrounds—from the ancient traditions of China to the rich and dynamic culture of Brazil, with its 500 years of history.

Together, we celebrate not just one nation’s independence, but the many stories, heritages, and journeys that make us who we are.

Honoring Independence Days Around the World

Brazil gained its independence nearly 200 years ago and celebrates it every year on September 7th. In contrast, China commemorates the founding of the People’s Republic on October 1st, a day of great national pride.

Here at the office, we’re proud to be a truly multicultural team. We also have colleagues from India—a civilization with a rich and ancient history—who celebrate Independence Day on August 15th, marking freedom from British rule.

And let’s not forget our Mexican teammates, who celebrate Mexican Independence Day on September 16th—not on “Cinco de Mayo,” as many mistakenly believe.

Together, these immigrant stories in America help us honor and learn from diverse histories that enrich our shared journey.

Margaret W. Wong: A Lifelong Commitment to Immigration Law

Margaret W. Wong’s own story is a powerful example among many immigrant stories in America.

I was born in Hong Kong and moved to the United States in 1969. After earning my J.D. from the University at Buffalo Law School, I made Cleveland my home in 1977. Just one year later, I founded my own immigration law firm—driven by a deep passion for helping others build their future in this country.

What began as a small, one‑person practice has since grown into Margaret W. Wong & Associates, LLC—a nationally recognized immigration law firm with more than 60 dedicated professionals and offices in nine cities across the U.S. Our headquarters is proudly located at 3150 Chester Avenue in Cleveland, Ohio.

Throughout every challenge and every success, one belief has always guided me:
America is still the greatest country in the world.

Grecia Robles’ Story: Giving Back Through Opportunity

Among the many immigrant stories in America is Grecia Robles’ journey of gratitude and service.

I hold dual nationality—Mexican and American. As a minor, I legally entered the United States after my father secured lawful residency on my behalf. Just a few months later, I proudly became a U.S. citizen.

From the beginning, this country welcomed me with open arms. It gave me the chance to study, graduate, and build a fulfilling and successful career. In return, I have dedicated my efforts to giving back—helping thousands of immigrants navigate legal pathways to the U.S. and assisting many more in finding lawful ways to remain here.

Today, I proudly call the United States my home. I have lived here longer than in the country of my birth, and I remain profoundly grateful for the opportunities and freedoms this nation has given me.

Matheus Areas: A New Beginning in America

Matheus Areas’ experience adds another voice to these immigrant stories in America.

I moved to the United States ten years ago in search of a better life. After completing my studies in Europe, I was deeply affected by the Eurozone financial crisis. Jobs were scarce, opportunities were limited, and uncertainty dominated daily life.

Coming to America changed everything. It offered a fresh start, a new perspective, and a powerful sense of independence.
