Cleveland Community Cultural Events Continue Despite Winter Weather
Despite challenging winter conditions on Saturday and Sunday, January 18 and 19, community members made every effort to stay connected across Cleveland. Although the incremental weather limited travel, we were still able to attend three meaningful gatherings that reflected the city’s cultural diversity and strong sense of community.
Asian Business Association of Ohio New Year Celebration
The first stop on Saturday evening was the 2025 New Year Celebration hosted by the Asian Business Association of Ohio (ABAO) at Li Wah Restaurant in Asia Plaza. Margaret W. Wong & Associates LLC sponsored the event in support of ABAO’s mission “to help Asian‑owned businesses gain opportunities and growth.”
During the celebration, Ms. Lei Jiang, President of ABAO, generously offered time for remarks. We used the opportunity to express how proud we are to work for Margaret W. Wong & Associates LLC, an organization that has long assisted individuals and families of all income levels as they navigate the U.S. immigration system.
German Central Farm Foundation Centennial Celebration
After the ABAO event, we traveled to Parma to attend the 100 Year Anniversary Celebration of the German Central Farm Foundation. Upon arrival, we spoke with Leonard May, President of the Foundation, who explained that the organization’s mission is to preserve German culture while maintaining a welcoming space for the broader community.
Having attended many events at German Central Farm over the years, including several previously featured on this blog, we have seen this mission in action. The evening included live performances by Lula’s Button Box Revue and the Gemütlichkeit Clevelander Musikanten, creating an atmosphere of celebration and reflection.
While admiring the anniversary cakes, we also spoke with Helmut Sems, Treasurer of the Foundation. Mr. Sems shared a moving account of his family’s immigration to the United States in 1949, when he was nine years old. As he reflected on that journey, he spoke emotionally about what U.S. citizenship has meant to him — a moment that left a lasting impression on all present.
Supporting Local Traditions at St. Emeric Church
On Sunday morning, despite lingering weather conditions, we visited St. Emeric Church near the West Side Market. Ms. Margaret W. Wong purchased several dozen freshly made donuts for the attorneys and staff of the firm’s Cleveland office.
Church volunteers explained that the donuts were made using a traditional Hungarian recipe. Many expressed pride in taking part in the annual bake sale, which serves two important purposes: raising funds for their church and sharing the food and culture of their country of origin with the community.
