Trump Green Card Proposal for Foreign Graduates
Trump Green Card Proposal for Foreign Graduates
In an unexpected shift from his usual campaign rhetoric, former President Donald Trump has proposed granting automatic green cards to foreign students graduating from U.S. colleges. During a podcast interview with venture capitalists and tech investors on All‑In, Trump suggested that graduates of both junior colleges and four‑year institutions should receive green cards as part of their diplomas. He said this approach would allow them to remain in the United States after graduation. The proposal represents a significant expansion of the U.S. immigration system and differs from Trump’s prior messaging on immigration.
Trump Green Card Proposal Discussed on Podcast
Trump has made immigration a central issue in his 2024 presidential campaign. He often speaks about what he describes as risks posed by illegal immigration to public safety and the job market. Trump has also pledged to carry out the largest deportation operation in U.S. history if re‑elected.
Although Trump and his allies frequently distinguish between legal and illegal immigration, his administration previously supported proposals to reduce levels of legal immigration. These efforts included potential cuts to family‑based visas and the diversity visa lottery program.
Prior Immigration Policies and Visa Programs
In 2017, Trump signed the “Buy American and Hire American” executive order. The order aimed to ensure that employment‑based visas were awarded only to the highest‑paid or most‑skilled applicants. Trump has also criticized the H‑1B visa program, which technology companies commonly used to hire foreign workers. He has argued that the program disadvantages U.S. workers.
During the podcast interview, Trump said the coronavirus pandemic prevented him from implementing changes he had considered earlier. He also recounted examples of college graduates from countries such as India and China who were unable to secure visas and eventually returned home. According to Trump, some of those individuals went on to become successful entrepreneurs abroad.
Trump emphasized that American companies need access to a pool of smart, skilled workers to remain competitive.
Campaign Clarification on the Proposal
Following the interview, campaign press secretary Karoline Leavitt provided additional clarification. She said the Trump green card proposal would involve extensive vetting. According to Leavitt, the plan would exclude individuals with extremist affiliations or those who could undercut American wages. She added that the proposal would apply only to graduates who undergo thorough screening and are capable of making significant contributions to the United States.
