Haiti TPS Extension Through February 2026
The Biden administration announced an expansion of deportation relief and work permits for approximately 309,000 Haitians currently residing in the United States, according to the Department of Homeland Security on Friday, June 28.

Under the Haiti TPS extension, the Temporary Protected Status program now covers eligible Haitians through February 2026. DHS cited severe violence and ongoing security challenges in Haiti. These conditions continue to limit access to essential services, including safety, healthcare, food, and water. The expansion applies to Haitians who were present in the United States as of June 3. Previously, about 264,000 Haitians in the U.S. were covered under TPS.
President Joe Biden, who is seeking re‑election, continues to navigate a complex political environment related to immigration policy. At the same time, his approach includes efforts to strengthen security at the U.S.–Mexico border. It also emphasizes humanitarian protections for undocumented immigrants already in the country.
During a recent debate, Biden faced criticism from his Republican opponent, former President Donald Trump. The criticism focused on Biden’s handling of illegal immigration.
Haiti remains deeply unstable. Gang violence has displaced more than half a million people. Meanwhile, nearly five million people face acute food insecurity. Armed groups have taken control of much of the capital. As a result, widespread violence, kidnappings, and other serious abuses continue.
