International Student Enrollment Sees Significant Growth
International student enrollment in the United States continues to strengthen, as the country remains a preferred destination for students pursuing higher education. During the 2022–2023 academic year, the nation hosted more than one million students. This information comes from the latest Open Doors Report on International Educational Exchange.
Key Findings From the Open Doors Report
The 2023 report, released by the Institute of International Education and the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, notes a 14% surge in new international student enrollment. This increase builds on an 80% rise from the previous year.
Lee Satterfield, Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs, highlights the global acknowledgment of the United States’ leadership in higher education across a wide range of institutions. With almost 4,000 accredited higher education institutions throughout the country, the U.S. government and its educational institutions express eagerness to welcome international students. They offer options that range from trade education to advanced degrees in technology.
Enrollment Trends Across Degree Levels
Mirka Martel, Head of Research, Evaluation, and Learning at IIE, reports that the enrollment of 298,523 new international students surpassed pre‑pandemic levels. It also nearly reached the record high observed in the 2015–2016 academic year. According to the report, enrollment increased across all degree levels and fields of study. Graduate programs experienced a notable 21% rise.
International students continued to enroll at colleges and universities across all U.S. states and territories. During the same year, 48 states reported an increase in international student numbers.
Growth Among Student Populations
The 2022–2023 academic year also saw a 35% increase in students from India, totaling 268,923.
Karan Gupta, Head of Karan Gupta Consulting, explains that the United States remains attractive to Indian students due to top‑tier universities and strong research opportunities. Fields such as engineering, computer science, and business continue to draw interest. The U.S. job market in these sectors adds to that appeal.
Ghana, with more than 6,000 students at U.S. institutions in 2022–2023, joined the list of the top 25 countries sending the most students. Sub‑Saharan Africa experienced the highest growth rate among world regions, increasing by 18%. As a result, Ghana made its debut in the top 25 places of origin.
Post‑Pandemic Recovery and Popular Fields
Despite disruptions caused by the COVID‑19 pandemic, which led to a decline in international student numbers in the 2019–2020 academic year, enthusiasm for studying in the United States remains strong. Popular fields of study in 2022–2023 include math and computer science, engineering, business and management, social sciences, and physical and life sciences.
Experts anticipate continued interest in U.S. higher education in the coming years.
