Growth of the U.S. Latino Economy: New Study Shows Major Gains
A new report from the Latino Donor Collaborative and Wells Fargo highlights the remarkable growth of the U.S. Latino economy. The study shows the Latino economy reaching $3.2 trillion in 2021, up from $2.8 trillion the year before. This increase reflects a decade of strong expansion.
Latino Economic Growth Outpaces National Trends
Over the past ten years, the Latino economy has grown two and a half times faster than the non‑Latino economy. This rapid expansion now exceeds the GDP of major global economies, including the United Kingdom, India, France, and Italy. The nonprofit LDC, which works to reshape perceptions of U.S. Latinos through data, presented these findings.
If considered an independent nation, the Latino economy would rank as the world’s fifth‑largest economy.
Key Industries Driving the Growth of the U.S. Latino Economy
The study identifies several sectors that support continued economic strength. These include accommodation and food services, construction, administrative support, waste management, and transportation. These industries show consistent stability and strong participation from Latino workers and business owners.
Geographically, Latino economic impact is widespread. However, California, Texas, and Florida lead the nation. California contributed $682 billion, Texas contributed $465 billion, and Florida added $240 billion. These numbers reflect population size, labor force participation, and productivity.
California’s Latino economy alone would rank as the 21st largest economy in the world.
Emerging Latino Markets Show Rapid Expansion
States with smaller Latino populations are also experiencing rapid growth. South Dakota, North Dakota, and New Hampshire show notable increases in Latino economic activity. South Dakota recorded an 11.8% annual growth rate in 2021, slightly ahead of neighboring states.
These emerging markets highlight the expanding reach of Latino economic influence.
Wage Growth and Purchasing Power Continue to Rise
The report also highlights rising wages and salary income within the Latino community. In 2021, Latino wages totaled $1.67 trillion. Over the past decade, Latinos experienced an annualized wage growth rate of 4.7%, compared to 1.9% for non‑Latinos. Despite this progress, a wage gap remains. Latino workers earn about 80 cents for every dollar earned by white non‑Hispanic workers.
Latino purchasing power remains strong, reaching $3.4 trillion in 2021. This purchasing power has grown between 2.1 and 2.4 times faster than that of non‑Latinos, reinforcing the continued growth of the U.S. Latino economy.
