TPS for Ukraine and Sudan Extended Through 2025

TPS for Ukraine and Sudan Extended Through 2025

The TPS for Ukraine and Sudan has been extended through 2025, offering continued protection for nationals who cannot safely return home. This update reflects ongoing conflicts and humanitarian crises that prevent stable conditions in both countries.

On August 18, the Department of Homeland Security announced an 18‑month extension and redesignation of TPS for Ukraine and Sudan. The new period runs from October 20, 2023, through April 19, 2025. DHS cited ongoing instability and conflict as the primary reasons for the extension.

The redesignation also expands eligibility. More Ukrainian and Sudanese nationals in the United States may now apply for TPS. Students from both countries may reduce their course loads and work additional hours while maintaining lawful F‑1 status.

Impact on Ukrainian Nationals

Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas emphasized the need to protect Ukrainians affected by Russia’s invasion. He stated that the United States will continue offering humanitarian relief to those unable to return home.

The extension affects about 26,000 current Ukrainian TPS holders. Under the redesignation, an estimated 166,700 additional Ukrainian nationals may qualify. This group includes individuals without lawful status and those in nonimmigrant categories.

Impact on Sudanese Nationals

Sudanese nationals residing in the United States as of August 16, 2023, may now qualify for TPS. DHS also issued Special Student Relief for Sudanese F‑1 students. These students may request work authorization, reduce their course loads, and work more hours during the TPS period.

Secretary Mayorkas noted that Sudan continues to face political instability and violent conflict. The extension will support about 1,200 current Sudanese TPS holders and may make 2,750 additional individuals eligible.

Re‑Registration and Initial Filing Requirements

Current TPS holders from Ukraine and Sudan must re‑register between August 21 and October 20, 2023, to maintain their status and work authorization.

First‑time applicants must file Form I‑821 during the initial registration period, which runs through April 19, 2025. Applicants may also request an Employment Authorization Document by submitting Form I‑765 with their TPS application or at a later time.

Why This Extension Matters

The TPS for Ukraine and Sudan provides critical protection for individuals facing war, political unrest, and humanitarian crises. The redesignation ensures that more people can remain safe while conditions in their home countries remain unstable.
