USCIS Expands Online DACA Filing for Renewal Applicants

USCIS announced a major update that expands access to online DACA filing for individuals who previously received DACA. This change reflects the agency’s ongoing effort to modernize its systems and improve efficiency for applicants.

USCIS Opens Online Filing for Form I‑821D

United States Citizenship and Immigration Services confirmed that individuals who previously received DACA can now file Form I‑821D online. USCIS Director Ur M. Jaddou emphasized that expanding digital access remains a priority as the agency continues moving toward a fully electronic environment. She noted that online filing helps reduce reliance on paper records and improves processing efficiency for both applicants and the agency.

Who Can File Online and What They Must Submit

At this time, online filing is available only to individuals who have already been granted DACA in the past. These applicants must also file Form I‑765 online and upload Form I‑765WS as supporting evidence. First‑time DACA applicants must still submit Form I‑821D in paper format, because the court order currently prevents USCIS from granting initial DACA requests.

During fiscal year 2021, USCIS received more than 8.8 million applications for immigration benefits, including 438,950 DACA requests through Form I‑821D. Since the launch of online filing in 2017, the number of digital submissions has increased significantly. In fiscal year 2021, more than 1.2 million petitions and applications were filed online, reflecting a steady rise in electronic processing.

How to File DACA Forms Online

To file Form I‑821D and Form I‑765 online, applicants must first create a USCIS online account. The account allows users to submit forms, pay fees, upload evidence, and track their case status throughout the adjudication process. There is no cost to create an account, and users can communicate with USCIS through a secure inbox and respond to requests for evidence electronically.

With the addition of Form I‑821D, USCIS now offers 13 forms that can be filed online. These forms are listed on the agency’s “Forms Available for Online Filing” page. USCIS continues to accept the latest paper versions of all forms for applicants who prefer or require traditional submission.

Impact of the Texas Court Order

Under the court order issued in State of Texas, et al. v. United States of America, et al., DHS continues to accept both initial and renewal DACA applications. However, the July 16, 2021 ruling prohibits DHS from granting initial DACA requests. Renewal applications and related employment authorization requests continue to be processed.

This update marks an important step in expanding online DACA filing and improving access for renewal applicants. As USCIS continues modernizing its systems, digital filing options will likely grow. These changes help streamline the process and support more efficient case management for DACA recipients navigating the immigration system. The expansion of online DACA filing reflects a broader shift toward electronic processing across the agency.
