Immigration Help in Cleveland: Standing Against Hate
On Monday evening, November 29th, we drove to the Jewish Federation of Cleveland on Science Park Drive in Beachwood to take part in a “Shine a Light” gathering. This event addressed the disturbing rise of antisemitism and reminded us why community solidarity and immigration help in Cleveland are so important.
Understanding the Issue
During the program, we learned that FBI statistics show hate crimes rose significantly in 2020. Alarmingly, approximately 55% of all religious-motivated crimes targeted Jews, who comprise only 2% of U.S. adults. These numbers underscore why gatherings like this matter—they bring people together to stand against hatred and discrimination.
Voices of Leadership and Hope
The event, held on the second night of Chanukah 2021, was opened and closed by Mr. Bradley Sherman, Chair of the Federation’s 2022 Campaign for Jewish Needs. He expressed gratitude for the presence of non-Jewish allies, noting that their support strengthens the fight against antisemitism.
Speakers included Ms. Rachel Uram, who shared a harrowing personal experience; Reverend Sharon Cole, advocating for inclusivity; Mr. Joe Cimperman of Global Cleveland, who reminded us that welcoming immigrants helps break down prejudice; Ms. Hallie Kogelschatz, who discussed the dangers of antisemitism on social media; and Rabbi Avery Joel, who reflected on the meaning of Chanukah.
A Message of Solidarity
The program concluded with the lighting of a large Menorah by visitors from Israel and songs performed by students from Gross Schechter Day School. Afterwards, attendees enjoyed fellowship over hot drinks and pastries. Particularly moving was a letter from U.S. Congresswoman Shontel Brown, urging everyone to reject antisemitism in all forms.
Moments like these remind us that combating hate requires education, dialogue, and strong community ties. For immigrants, these values are equally vital as they navigate life in a new country.
