Immigrant Community Support Through Art and Cultural Expression
On Friday evening, November 5th, we attended the opening night of “Making Home: A Refugee and Immigrant Art Exhibition” at the Current Gallery in Cleveland’s 78th Street Studios. The event highlighted the power of immigrant community support through art created by foreign‑born artists from Iraq, Mexico, Ukraine, Italy, and the Congo, as well as students from Thomas Jefferson International Newcomers Academy.
The exhibition was presented by US Together, an organization dedicated to serving refugees and people who have immigrated to the United States. Its mission centers on education, advocacy, community building, and support services that strengthen the well‑being of newcomers.
Community Support for Immigrant and Refugee Artists
Special recognition goes to Ms. Liv Randall, Community Engagement and Development Specialist at US Together, who played a central role in organizing the exhibition. Her work helped create a welcoming space where artists could share their stories, cultures, and creative visions.
While viewing the artwork and enjoying samosas from Habesha Ethiopian and Eritrean Restaurant, we listened to thoughtful remarks from several community leaders. Speakers included Ms. Nadia Kasvin, Co‑Founder of US Together; Mr. Ron Hedrick, Director of its Cleveland office; and Reverend Amanda Moseng of Church of the Savior in Cleveland Heights. Their messages emphasized dignity, belonging, and the importance of cultural understanding.
Inclusive Spaces for Immigrant Cultural Expression
The program also featured a video message from Mr. Mark Hetfield, President of HIAS, an organization that provides essential services to refugees and asylum seekers worldwide. His remarks reinforced the global importance of immigrant community support and the need to protect the rights of displaced people.
Reverend Moseng’s words were especially moving. She reflected on the beauty of diverse artistic expression and the value of learning from one another. She reminded attendees that communities grow stronger when they welcome people from different cultures and backgrounds. Her message captured the heart of the evening: a celebration of shared humanity and the richness that newcomers bring to Cleveland.
Strengthening Cultural Inclusion for Newcomer Communities
Events like this demonstrate how art can build bridges and deepen understanding. They also highlight the ongoing need for immigrant community support across Northeast Ohio. By uplifting refugee and immigrant voices, organizations like US Together help create a more inclusive and compassionate community.
