Family Engagement and Student Success Forum

On Friday, January 21st, we attended an important forum at the City Club of Cleveland titled “Now More Than Ever: Family Engagement and Student Success.” This event highlighted the critical role families play in shaping educational outcomes for students.

The discussion featured a panel moderated by Mr. Dan Moulthrop, CEO of the City Club. He engaged in a thoughtful conversation with Dr. Habeebah R. Grimes, CEO of Positive Education Program, and Ms. Gina Garrett, Family Program Manager at Open Doors Academy. Joining virtually was Dr. Karen L. Mapp, Senior Lecturer at Harvard Graduate School of Education, whose research focuses on building strong partnerships between families and educators to support student achievement.

Why Family Engagement Matters

Throughout the forum, panelists emphasized that family engagement and student success are deeply connected. One key issue discussed was the impact of implicit bias on family involvement. Often, schools assume that if parents do not attend conferences or events, they are disengaged. However, extended family members, pastors, and close friends frequently provide meaningful support to students and schools.

Immigrant Families and Education

The conversation also highlighted immigrant and refugee families’ commitment to education. Despite language barriers, these families prioritize learning and actively seek ways to participate in their children’s academic journey. Educators at the event confirmed that immigrant families value education as much as those with deep roots in the United States.

We even shared a table with a retired professional who previously referred foreign-born individuals to local support organizations, reinforcing the importance of community connections.
