Dyngus Day Cleveland Returns in 2022
On Monday morning, April 18th, we attended the 10 a.m. opening of Dyngus Day Cleveland at the Gordon Green Event Center on Detroit Avenue. The celebration marked the first large‑scale Dyngus Day event in two years. The return of this beloved tradition brought excitement, energy, and a strong sense of community.
We arrived a little early, which proved helpful. Despite the cold and light snow, a large crowd gathered for the festivities. Many attendees seemed eager to reconnect after two years of pandemic‑related limitations. Although a small gathering took place in 2021 at the Forest City Brewery, this year’s event marked a true return to form.
The History and Traditions of Dyngus Day
Dyngus Day originated in Poland and is known as a joyful celebration marking the end of Lent. The holiday features Polka music, dancing, beer, perogies, and paczki—also known as jelly donuts. The crowning of “Miss Dyngus Day” and the lively parade are also central traditions.
These customs continue to make Dyngus Day Cleveland a cherished cultural event for many families.
Meeting Festival Participants and Past Miss Dyngus Winners
While waiting for the ceremonies to begin, we met a friendly man named Sonny. He wore a “Polka Santa” jacket and travels from Orwell each year to join the celebration. His enthusiasm captured the spirit of the day.
We also photographed three former Miss Dyngus winners:
- Ms. Patricia Karabowicz (2017)
- Ms. Marlene Thompson‑Ski (2018)
- Ms. Erika Thompson‑Skovich (2021)
All three were cheerful and happy to pose for photos.
Opening Ceremonies and Polka Performances
The opening ceremonies were led by the legendary DJ Kisha. The Chardon Polka Band provided lively music that set the tone for the day.
Mr. Doug Kusak also returned to read his well‑known poem, “Twas the Day before Dyngus.” The poem mirrors the rhythm of “Twas the Night before Christmas” and delighted the audience.
Even a brief rain shower could not dampen the excitement. As DJ Kisha remarked, “We are all being baptized by the polka spirits!”
The celebration showed once again why Dyngus Day Cleveland remains a treasured tradition.
