A Festive Saturday at the Czech Holiday Fair
On Saturday morning, November 13th, we drove to the historic Bohemian National Hall on Broadway Avenue. We were excited to enjoy the 2021 Czech Holiday Fair, which was proudly presented by Sokol Greater Cleveland. The event filled the entire building and created a warm, welcoming atmosphere.
Exploring All Three Floors
The first floor offered beer, baked goods, and books, which many guests called the three “B’s.” The basement served a comforting hot meal that featured chicken paprikash and cabbage and noodles. Meanwhile, the grand ballroom on the third floor displayed imported Czech and Slovak ornaments, costume jewelry, and embroidered clothing. Each space highlighted a different part of the culture.
A Conversation with Mr. Howie Wise
During our visit, we spent time with Mr. Howie Wise, a very active Sokol member. He estimated that the Czech Holiday Fair has been held for about forty years. Even during the pandemic, a modified version kept the tradition alive. Although attendance varies, he said each year remains successful, and he was pleased with the day’s turnout.
Volunteers Supporting a Cultural Mission
Mr. Wise also shared that roughly 100–125 Sokol members volunteered in some capacity. Their efforts matter because the Fair is the organization’s largest annual fundraiser. More importantly, everyone is eager to share their heritage with the community, which strengthens the event’s purpose.
Friends and Future Celebrations
While browsing the ballroom, we met our good friends, Mr. Paul and Mr. Fran Burik. They mentioned that 2022 will mark the 125th anniversary of the Bohemian National Hall’s construction.
