Cultural Diversity and Community Celebrations in Northeast Ohio

Celebrating Cultural Diversity in Northeast Ohio

On Saturday morning, November 13th, we visited the Bohemian National Hall on Broadway Avenue to enjoy the 2021 Annual Czech Holiday Fair presented by Sokol Greater Cleveland. The event offered a warm reminder of the value of cultural diversity in our region.

As its website explains, India Festival USA is an annual event designed to bridge cultures, generations, and communities through a single day of togetherness. Moreover, the festival highlights the shared traditions that strengthen community bonds.

To honor the occasion, Mayors Frank G. Jackson of Cleveland, Gregory P. Kurtz of Independence, and Samuel J. Alai of Broadview Heights issued proclamations. They recognized Diwali as one of the world’s most cherished festivals. They also acknowledged that people who immigrated to the United States from India and other Asian countries form the largest immigrant group in Northeast Ohio. This recognition further underscored the importance of cultural diversity.

Honoring Young Leaders and Community Voices

In the spirit of bridging cultures, the afternoon’s highlight was the recognition of Miss Dariana Rivera Ortiz and Miss Cecile Diaz Hernandez. They were the top finishers in the Miss Latina Image Leadership Program at the Julia De Burgos Cultural Arts Center.

Ms. Yasin Cuevas, the program director, explained that the initiative supports young women ages thirteen to seventeen. Its purpose is “to inspire, educate, and empower the participants to achieve their full potential.” Her remarks reinforced the program’s commitment to inclusive leadership and community pride.

Community Connections and Shared Traditions

When we arrived, our friend Mr. Bharat Kumar greeted us with enthusiasm. He coordinates the festival each year and always brings great energy to the event. However, he noted that due to Covid‑19 precautions, attendance had to be limited to one hundred people.

Several special guests joined the celebration. They included Ms. Leticia Lopez, Executive Director of the Julia De Burgos Cultural Arts Center; Mr. Ed Romero, Manager of the Office of Risk Management for the City of Cleveland; and Ms. Erin Lalley, Assistant to Mayor Michael P. Byrne of Parma Heights and soon‑to‑be Director of the Parma Senior Center. Their presence reflected the community’s ongoing support for cultural diversity.

Although we could not stay for the Diwali celebration, we heard a beautiful closing poem by Mr. Navender Nadeem. He wrote that shaking hands is good, but a “greeting of the hearts” matters more. His words captured the spirit of the afternoon and the deep connections formed through shared cultural experiences.
