Fundraiser for Ed Fitzgerald
On Monday, June 23rd, we attended a fundraiser for Cuyahoga County Executive Ed Fitzgerald who is currently running for Governor of Ohio which was held at the Market Garden Brewery in Ohio City. We have known Mr. Fitzgerald for a long time and he was very glad to see us tonight and thanked Margaret W. Wong for her generous support. In fact quite a few people attended this event which ran from 6pm to almost 9pm; Mr. David Merriman, Deputy Chief of Staff for Cuyahoga County Dept. of Human Services, said that he counted "4 different clusters of 10 or 12 people." We had a very relaxing, enjoyable time casually mingling with and getting to know such people as:
***Ms. Loung Ung who immigrated to the United States from Cambodia in 1980 as a survivor of the "killing fields" and is now a human rights activist and the author of two books "First They Killed My Father: a Daughter of Cambodia Remembers" and "Lucky Child: A Daughter of Cambodia Reunites with the Sister She Left Behind".
***Mr. Richard Demsey and Ms. Cynthia Demsey. We know Ms. Demsey as Chair of the Cuyahoga Democratic Party Women's Caucus and spent a fair of amount of time speaking with Mr. Demsey and getting to know him. He is a lawyer of 32 years as well as an instructor at Cleveland Marshall.
***Ms. Noreen Flannery who works as an Intervention Specialist for Children with Autism in Cuyahoga County. She is also the cousin of Ed Fitzgerald and smiled as she said that he can always count on her vote. We also got to shake hands with her husband John who is a sculptor who designed and created the Charles F. Kettering statue which is in Central Park in Loudenville, Ohio.
***Mr. Brendan Doyle, Assistant Prosecuting Attorney for the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor's Office, and the son of Mr. Bud Doyle who went to law school with Margaret W. Wong and is an old friend of Ms. Wong's.
***Mr. Mark McNulty who is the owner of Market Garden Brewery but still enjoys actually pouring the beer at the bar on occasion.
***Mr. Justin Carson who is a young businessperson who will open a new brewery called "Platform Brewery" in Ohio City on July 4th.
***Ms. Nora L. Hurley, Deputy Chief Law Director for Cuyahoga County Department of Law. Ms. Hurley teaches Sunday school at the Latvian Church in Lakewood which we have visited several times so we had a good discussion about the events that we attended at her church as well as how easy it is for young people to lose touch with the heritage of the country that their parent and/or grandparents left in order to immigrate to the United States.
In addition to the above we said hello to people we know well such as Megan O' Bryan, CEO of the Cleveland Transformation Alliance; Harriet Applegate, Executive Secretary of the North Shore AFL-CIO; George Hrbek, now retired but former Executive Director of the Lutheran Metropolitan Ministries; Chris Ronayne, who is President of University Circle; and David Quolke, President of the Cleveland Teachers Union.
